Particles for drug delivery: Perspectives and risk assessment

Research topics:

Penetration kinetics of particulate substances into the stratum corneum and into the hair follicles, drug delivery by particles, release mechanisms of active components from particles at the target structure, safety evaluation of particles.

Methods:

Cyanoacrylate biopsy
Penetration of fluorescing nanoparticles into hair follicle
  • Differential stripping (combination of tape stripping and cyanoacrylate skin surface biopsy) for separate analysis of intercellular and follicular penetration
  • Laser scanning microscopy of histological sections for the determination of the follicular penetration depth of topically applied particles
  • Separation of epidermal Langerhans cells and analysis of their uptake of topically applied substances
  • In vivo laser scanning microscopy
  • Two-photon microscopy combined with FLIM and CARS (in vivo, ex vivo, in vitro)
  • Confocal Raman microscopy combined with SERS (in vivo, ex vivo, in vitro)
  • In vivo and in vitro electron paramagnetic resonance L, X, W-band spectroscopy
  • Penetration and storage of drugs as well as the determination of drug localization within a dermal carrier system
  • X-ray microscopy
  • Non-invasive assessment of irritative effects (erythema, barrier damage, stratum corneum desiccation)
